Scouting for new dream guests ...

With passion, expertise and the individual "eye of the beholder"

A childhood on the move

A childhood on the move

Growing up in three European countries as a child of travel-mad parents, I flew for the first time when I was two and a half years old. During disembarkation I escaped my mother's hand and was finally located in the cockpit by the crew. The captain immediately understood my behaviour correctly: I had enjoyed flying and I wanted to have another go right away. At our destination London, our neighbours were also new arrivals (from Ecuador), with whose children I played enthusiastically and communicated in a mixture of German, English and Spanish. My greatest passion was for nature and wild animals. The series "Daktari" fuelled both my passion for travelling and my interest in wildlife. In a big city, the latter was not very easy to satisfy - hence our neighbor's cat took over the role of the lion Clarence. When I finally watched "Serengeti Shall Not Die" at the age of 7, I knew for sure: Africa is where I belong!

True love (and) Africa

True love (and) Africa

After three years in Belgium and A-levels in Germany, a decision was due: What next? It was obvious to me: study biology and follow in the footsteps of my heroes. Bernhard Grzimek, Gerald Durrell, Jane Goodall, Jacques Cousteau... the great researchers and their work fascinated me. My much-loved biology teacher advised me to take up veterinary medicine instead, suggesting that it would give me a better foundation than biology. Thus: off to Hannover! Seven years later I had passed my degree and my PhD. I already had a job in microbiology. However, in the meantime, marriage to my true love lay between me and the life of a researcher in Africa. Years of intensive negotiations followed when planning our holidays: How much time did my husband get for his passion, the railway, particularly steam locomotives, and how much time did I get for observing wildlife. We travelled to Spain, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, USA, Canada and finally to Cuba.

Meanwhile, medical issues prevented me from continuing to work in the microbiological laboratory, just as a friend was urgently in need of multilingual help for his tour operator company. In 1996, I started to work as a freelancer planning and booking self-drive tours in southern Africa, based on the experience I had gained during my own travels there. Starting with South Africa, where my first trip to the African Continent took me, I matched dream guests with their dream accommodations. Those who wanted to camp in the wilderness, as far away from civilisation as possible, received exactly that after intensive consultation and planning - also based on the photos I had taken during my travels. Likewise, those guests who wanted a wonderful lodge with four-poster beds and a pool on their own veranda for their honeymoon got their dream holiday tailor-made.

Daktari-Tours and Zimbabwe Travel

Over the years I extended my travels further and further to other countries on the African continent. Accordingly, I was able to provide our travel guests with extensive advice on these countries and make their dream journeys come true together with them. Over time, my colleague increasingly specialised in business trips and flights, so I continued to work independently as a specialist tour operator with a focus on Southern Africa, West Africa, North America and Cuba. In the course of time, a safari company and then a tour operator in Zimbabwe asked me to represent them at the ITB fair in Berlin. They were interested in cooperating with German tour operators, but did not have the time or the means to fly to Germany themselves. Since 2014 I have represented a wide variety of companies based in Southern Africa toward tour operators in Germany. It was a new responsibility and a new challenge, which still gives me a lot of pleasure, particularly since I myself do not sell tours any more.

All in all, it is thanks to my special preference for Zimbabwe, a still strongly underestimated travel destination in southern Africa, that I have been even more deeply involved with photography. I was privileged to design Zimbabwe trips for two renowned wildlife photographers. The many aspects that had to be taken into account fascinated me and inspired me even more strongly to develop my own passion for photography. Over the years I continued to develop this enthusiasm, accompanied by further courses in professional photography in various fields. The more exotic the destinations became, the more important photos of the lodges, the activities, the vehicles, the atmosphere became for the travellers, but they were sadly often missing from travel guide books. Accordingly, I invested even more energy and time in the challenge of bringing back photos that really reflected the experiences that our guests could expect.

In the course of comprehensive changes also in the travel industry, with ever greater involvement of digital media, my work has increasingly shifted towards representation and marketing. I created a large part of the photo and video material for my clients and wrote many of the texts for the exposés and online presences, because I know from experience what clients want to know, what their worries and fears are with certain types of travel and how to win them over on the one hand with objective information and on the other hand with romantic, exciting, appealing images and videos. I know what questions customers always ask the tour operator and what concerns they have when planning a trip to new, fascinating but also unknown countries. One of my most important clients and a small part of the material I created for him can be found in the sample gallery at " The Umbozha".
